Berny Sansome

Counsellor and Psychotherapist in Central Manchester

I am a qualified Psychotherapist registered with the BACP. I work with all adults and young people aged 16 plus. My background in counselling includes working in private practice, adult bereavement services, education settings, and charities.

If the circumstances of life become complicated or overwhelming, or maybe you are coping with anxiety or stress, a loss, a change in circumstance, relationship issues or low self esteem, I can work with you as you find your way through those difficulties.

My Experience

My background includes bereavement counselling through an NHS service and Cruse Bereavement Care. I have also counselled clients in a 6th form college and a women’s centre. Additionally, I have experience of assessing adults accessing the counselling service offered by The University of Salford.

Prior to qualifying as a psychotherapist, I had a career as an HR Director in secondary education. In this role I worked with a diverse community of colleagues and young people. Education sees a great deal of change in a highly pressured environment which can be challenging for some. I can draw on the experience gained in HR in my role as a psychotherapist.

WHO I WORK WITH

I have the privilege of being able to work with adult clients and young people (aged 16 plus) from diverse backgrounds.

Clients I have worked with have sought support for various concerns including anxiety, stress, low self esteem, sexual identity, relationship issues, or work concerns.

Sometimes the experience of bereavement, loss, and grief can be complex and overwhelming.  Clients I have worked with have experienced bereavement and grief through a death by suicide, miscarriage, infertility, or a traumatic incident.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES

I am a person-centred counsellor and psychotherapist which comes under the umbrella of ‘talking therapies’. Where it is helpful for the client, I offer an integrated approach including aspects of CBT or Art therapy.

The terms counselling and psychotherapy are often interchangeable. The processes have some subtle differences, but both aim to enable a client to resolve issues that are troubling them. Counselling is normally time limited where there is a specific focus the client wishes to address. Psychotherapy is generally longer term with a purpose of enabling a client to explore at depth the underlying causes of their emotional turmoil which may be related to past life experiences. Working longer term gives an opportunity for clients to understand their way of being, become self-accepting, and therefore enable the change they seek.

Each client has different needs and the process of therapy is individual. The therapeutic space I offer is a non-judgemental, safe, and confidential environment where clients will be listened to and heard without judgement as they make the changes they need.
