Theoni Apostolopoulou

Chartered Clinical Psychologist

I am an experienced and friendly Chartered and HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist who enjoys working with children, adolescents and adults. I have a particular interest in working with people who have relationship difficulties (with parents, siblings, partners, peers or children), who experience neurodevelopmental difficulties, anxiety, anger, depression within their relationships, and people who may have experienced difficult, harmful or unfulfilling relationships, and perhaps continue to do so.

I have many years experience assessing and treating different client groups with mild and complex mental health and emotional difficulties. I have worked in numerous settings in the NHS, education settings and private practice. I am fluent in Greek, English and French and therefore I can offer therapeutic work in these languages if required.

My Experience

As a clinical psychologist, I have completed extensive and rigorous training that has qualified me to complete comprehensive clinical assessments of a range of mental health difficulties. A psychologist does not prescribe medication but gives careful consideration to suitable models of talking therapy depending on your individual needs and preferences.

I hold a specialist role in assessing and treating people with neurodevelopmental conditions e.g. Autism Spectrum Condition.

WHO I WORK WITH

I work across the lifespan with clients who experience a range of mild to severe mental health difficulties including:

Anxiety, Panic attacks, Phobias, Depression and low mood, low self -esteem, Generalised Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Health Anxiety, Eating Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Self-harm, Relational problems, Attachment and Trauma, Borderline Personality Disorders, Antisocial personality Disorders, Neurodevelopmental difficulties, Dissociation

I also provide clinical and management supervision to assistant psychologists, newly qualified psychologists and mental health practitioners.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES

So that I can offer a broad choice of treatments, I have completed additional training in Mentalization-based Therapy (MBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy and Trauma-Focused CBT which means I can offer help for symptoms of trauma, personality issues and relational distress. I also regularly apply Cognitive Behavioural (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Systemic models in my clinical work. I am able to draw on a range of different therapeutic models and treatments to best suit your individual needs. I work in a non-judgemental way and I firmly believe that emotional distress is often the mind’s way of coping with the many stressors, fears and difficulties that happen in life. As a clinical psychologist, I work empathically but with clear direction and with an active approach to therapy. Therapy takes work and commitment, and this can feel difficult and scary at times, I understand that. We will work at a pace that feels both comfortable and productive. Treatment will always be tailored to you and your specific needs, hopes and goals. I abide to clear codes of conduct and only offer therapies that have a strong evidence base. This is important because you can be assured that the therapies I can offer you are proven to be effective and are recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).
